Burn injuries are some of the most painful of wounds, and are the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, only exceeded by automobile accidents and falls. Due to their complexity, severe burn injuries are difficult to treat and heal. Not just the surface layers of the skin are affected, but also nerves, tissues, muscles, tendons, blood vessels, and bones. Fluid balance, body temperature, range of motion, joint function, dexterity, and physical appearance are also affected. Victims of severe burn injuries must undergo extensive surgeries and medical care, rehabilitation sessions, and counseling. Causes of Burn Injuries:
- Electrocution burns
- Building fires
- Chemical burns
- Thermal burns
- Smoke/heat inhalation
- Gas explosions
- Fume ignition
- Gasoline spills
- Flammable clothing
- Water heater fires
- Burn/scald from hot liquid
- Defective products
- Work-related accidents
Types of Burn Injuries:
- First-Degree Burns are the mildest, usually affecting only the topmost layer of skin. The classic first-degree burn in the sunburn. These burns can become lethal if they cover a majority of the total body surface area (TBSA), but most heal within a week or two.
- Second-Degree Burns affect the two topmost layers of skin, which may affect sweat glands and hair follicles. Severe second-degree burns lead to destabilized body temperature and fluid imbalance.
Third-Degree Burns are the most serious of burn injuries, and affect all three layers of skin. Many victims experience destroyed nerve endings (so they cannot feel pain) and must go through extensive surgeries to recover.
